The Food Chain
In every biome it starts with the sun. In the desert, the energy from the sun goes to the plants for photosynthesis. These plants such as: small grass and flowers, shrubs, and cacti, are fed on by herbivores such as the desert squirrel. Other animals that eat these plants include the Jack Rabbit and the Desert Mule. Most of these animals, except the Desert Mule, are eating by a carnivore known as the Desert Fox. But this is still not the top of the food chain. The fox, the deer, and the other herivores are eaten by a bigger carnivore known as the Coyote. The coyote has no predators, other than man, since it the desert does not host many large animal. The energy from the sun is absorbed by the plants and when eaten by the herbivores, they recieve that energy. Then when eatan by the carnivores, they recieve that energy.
Since there aren't many types of plants in the desert, there aren't many herbivores snce lack of food. As a result there aren't as many carnivores since lack of food. If another species were to come into play, such as jackals or bobcats. then the coyotes would become endangered becasue they would hunt the herbivores to extiction to compete for their survival.
